Trump Organization Seeks Trademarks for Airport Naming Rights

View source

The Trump Organization, the family company of the former president, has filed applications with the federal trademark office to secure exclusive rights to use the president’s name on airports and associated items. These items include shuttle buses, umbrellas, travel bags, and flight suits.

Context: Airport Naming Discussions Underway

These filings occur amid discussions in Florida regarding a state bill that proposes naming the Palm Beach airport after Trump. Further proposals include naming a tunnel between New York and New Jersey, and Dulles International Airport in Virginia, after him, amid a dispute concerning the tunnel's funding.

Trump Organization's Rationale and Royalty Stance

The Trump Organization stated that the applications were prompted by the Florida bill. They are intended for protection against "bad actors" due to the Trump name being "the most infringed trademark in the world."

The company clarified that the President and his family would not receive any royalty or financial compensation from the proposed renaming of Palm Beach International Airport.

However, the company did not immediately respond to inquiries about potential future royalties for other airports or merchandise.

Unprecedented Nature of the Filings

Trademark lawyer Josh Gerben noted the unprecedented nature of these applications.

"A sitting president's private company has never previously sought trademark rights in anticipation of such namings."

Specific Trademarks Sought by DTTM Operations

The applications, filed by DTTM Operations, a unit of the family company, specifically seek rights for:

  • "President Donald J. Trump International Airport"
  • "Donald J. Trump International Airport"
  • "DJT"

Broader Branding Efforts and Former President Trump's Business Structure

The family has expanded its branding efforts in the past year, placing its name on properties in various international locations and selling branded merchandise.

In response to criticisms of profiting from the presidency, Former President Trump has stated that his business is managed in a trust by his sons and that he is not involved in day-to-day operations.
