The U.S. cross-country team employs 10 ski technicians who travel across Europe in Yolanda. The truck, named in reference to the film Pulp Fiction, functions as their dedicated mobile workspace.

Oleg Ragilo, Team USA's Wax Boss since 2008, noted that Yolanda's acquisition eight years ago dramatically improved working conditions for the team.

"It eliminated the necessity of working in poorly ventilated metal storage units and the continuous packing and unpacking of equipment."

Design and Capacity

Yolanda is designed to expand its sides by approximately 10 feet when parked, creating an internal ski shop environment. It features workbenches that can accommodate eight technicians simultaneously. The truck stores approximately 600 pairs of skis, encompassing both athlete and test skis. Each of the team's 16 athletes typically has around 30 pairs, with various base surfaces optimized for different snow conditions.

The Science of Ski Waxing

Ragilo and his team select and apply specific ski waxes based on a comprehensive range of factors. These include snow temperature, density, age, type (natural or man-made), and detailed weather forecasts. This detailed preparation process is undertaken with the aim of providing a competitive advantage in races that can often be decided by the smallest margins.

A Valued Asset

Although Yolanda is smaller than the wax trucks utilized by some other national teams, such as Norway, Sweden, and Finland, long-time American coach Matt Whitcomb has a high regard for it.

The vehicle was acquired for approximately $750,000, funded entirely through a dedicated fundraising initiative. Yolanda also includes a refreshment station, fostering a positive team atmosphere.
