KATU Issues Weather Alert: Snow Levels to Drop, Heavy Snowfall Expected in Cascades

Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby indicated that colder air is expected to establish itself over the Pacific Northwest, potentially reducing the snow level to 500 feet as early as tonight.

Current Conditions and Short-Term Forecast

Snow accumulated at Government Camp on Highway 26 this morning, with an additional one to two inches expected to fall throughout the day. Timberline and Mt. Hood Meadows have each reported six inches of snow. Ski Bowl recorded one inch at its base and three inches at its top.

Following a warm front this morning, colder air is forecast to move into the region. This change will bring showers and a possible thunderstorm along the Oregon Coast.

High temperatures for today are projected to reach the mid-40s.

Digital Meteorologist Bobby Corser stated that any heavy shower could temporarily lower the snow level to the valley floor, though significant accumulation in the valley is considered unlikely. Residents at elevations above 500 feet may experience a dusting of snow.

Snow Accumulation Projections

Areas situated above 1,000 feet could see one to two inches of snow overnight and a total of two to five inches through Thursday.

The Cascades are forecast to receive a substantial 10 to 16 inches of snow through Thursday, contributing to the snowpack.
