View source

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has concluded an investigation into Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe concerning comments she made in October last year.

Investigation Details

The AFP initiated the investigation after receiving numerous reports following a speech Thorpe delivered at a pro-Palestinian protest in Melbourne. During her speech, Senator Thorpe stated:

"We will fight every day... and if I have to burn down Parliament House to make a point... I am not there to make friends. I’m there to get justice for our people."

Outcome

An AFP spokesperson confirmed that the matter has been finalized.

The agency determined there was "insufficient evidence of a criminal offence" and stated that no further action would be taken.

Senator Thorpe's Response

Senator Thorpe previously clarified that her comments were "obviously not a literal threat." She described the public response to her statements as "mock outrage."
