Former NRL Player Matt Utai Shot in Targeted Drive-By Incident

Former National Rugby League (NRL) player Matt Utai was shot multiple times in a targeted drive-by incident outside his home in Greenacre, Sydney, on Tuesday morning. The 44-year-old sustained serious injuries to his leg, shoulder, and chest, and underwent surgery. Police are investigating the incident, which they have described as a "brazen ambush," and are exploring potential links, including alleged associations of Mr. Utai's son with organized crime.

Incident Details

At approximately 6:00 AM on Tuesday, emergency services responded to reports of a shooting on Macquarie Street, Greenacre, in Sydney's west. Matt Utai had reportedly exited his family home and was preparing to drive to work when shots were fired from an SUV.

Mr. Utai, 44, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his lower leg, shoulder, and upper chest area. First responders administered first aid at the scene before paramedics stabilized him. He was transported to a hospital in serious condition and underwent surgery, later reported to be in a serious but stable condition.

Police Investigation

Shortly after the shooting, a white SUV believed to be the vehicle involved was discovered burned out on Samuel Street in Wiley Park. The vehicle has been seized for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

Superintendent Rodney Hart of the New South Wales Police stated that the incident was "definitely targeted" and described it as a "brazen ambush." The investigation has been transferred to Strike Force Raptor, the NSW Police unit focused on organized crime and bikie-related incidents.

Police are investigating the motive for the shooting and determining whether Mr. Utai was the intended target or if the incident was related to an individual he knows or is associated with. While police have noted Mr. Utai's minor traffic history, they have also stated he has no criminal record and is not believed to be involved in organized criminal activity.

Authorities are investigating Mr. Utai's son's alleged connections to the Alameddine crime family. In 2023, Mr. Utai's son, Iziah, was charged with gun and drug offenses, pleading guilty to possessing firearms and ammunition, including a shortened pump-action .22 rifle, and received a prison sentence. It has not been confirmed if Iziah Utai was present at the residence during the incident involving his father.
