Pixel Launcher Evolves: Android 17 Beta 1 and Android 16 QPR3 Introduce Major UI Changes

Android 17 Beta 1, released on February 13, 2026, brings significant updates focusing on large-screen experience improvements and performance boosts. Alongside the Android 16 QPR3 March update, these releases introduce several key modifications to the Pixel Launcher. These updates primarily involve a redesigned home screen search bar with enhanced customization options and, notably, the introduction of third-party search provider selections in Android 17 Beta 1, signaling an increased integration of Google app search functionality into the Pixel Launcher.

Pixel Launcher Search Bar Redesign

In December, the Google app took over the Pixel Launcher's search functionality. Now, the Android 16 QPR3 March update, combined with initial alterations seen in Android 17 Beta 1, has led to a complete revision of the Pixel Launcher's search bar design.

Previously, the Pixel Launcher featured a Material 3 Expressive search bar. This design was characterized by a 'G' logo, microphone, and Lens within a primary container, with an AI Mode shortcut housed in a separate circular icon to the right, all encapsulated within a pill-shaped background.

The new design completely replaces this Material 3 Expressive style, presenting a slimmer profile that functions as the Google widget. This updated look integrates the 'G' logo, AI Mode shortcut, microphone, and Lens all within a single container, positioning the AI Mode shortcut to the left of the microphone. Methods to revert to older Pixel Launcher search bar designs are no longer available. This current design aligns closely with the Google app’s Search homescreen widget, underscoring the deeper integration of the Google app's search functionality into the Pixel Launcher.

While this specific search bar modification initially appeared in Android 17 Beta 1, it was reverted in Beta 2. Its subsequent inclusion in Android 16 QPR3 strongly suggests that this design change is intended to be permanent.

Customizable Search Bar Shortcut

Both Android 17 Beta 1 and Android 16 QPR3 introduce a significant new feature: the ability to customize the AI Mode shortcut located directly within the search bar. This customization is easily accessible by long-pressing the search bar.

Users can now replace the default AI Mode shortcut with a variety of useful tools, including:

  • Gemini Live (referred to as 'Live' in some contexts)
  • Translate (for text or camera input)
  • Song Search
  • Weather
  • Sports
  • Dictionary
  • Homework
  • Finance
  • Saved
  • News

The option to disable the shortcut entirely also remains available, offering users full control over their search bar experience.

Third-Party Search Provider Integration

Android 17 Beta 1 includes hidden settings that empower users to choose alternative search providers for the search box.

App developer Kieron Quinn identified these groundbreaking options, which can include DuckDuckGo, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Pixel Search, and Google Maps. Crucially, any application can be set as a search provider, provided its first widget does not require a configuration user interface prior to being added to the home screen.

This setting also extends its control to the application displayed on the "minus one" Discover screen, though currently, only the Google app has been approved for this placement. These significant changes are noted to be potentially influenced by ongoing antitrust regulations. The persistence of these third-party search alterations in the final stable Android 17 release is currently unknown, as the operating system is still in its beta phase.

Additional User Interface Enhancements

Android 17 Beta 1 also introduces several other notable user interface adjustments:

  • The 'At a Glance' widget can now be removed from the home screen, a feature previously tested with select users in Android 16 QPR3 betas.
  • A refreshed brightness icon is present in Quick Settings, offering a subtle visual update.
  • A dedicated settings icon has been added at the bottom of the volume panel, providing clearer and more direct access to audio controls.
