This process traditionally takes human designers a year or more to complete. The Alpha Chip proved its efficacy by assisting in the design of three generations of Google's Tensor Processing Units.

Computer chips consist of millions to billions of logic gate components, making the manual placement process incredibly intricate and time-consuming.
