Study Explores Environmental Sustainability Views Among Kazakhstan's Healthcare Professionals

View source

Healthcare systems globally are increasingly recognizing the importance of environmental sustainability. However, knowledge about how healthcare professionals in Kazakhstan perceive and implement these practices is limited. A new qualitative study investigated the perspectives of Kazakhstani healthcare practitioners on environmental sustainability within healthcare, identifying key opportunities and challenges for developing greener health systems.

Background

Environmental sustainability is a critical focus for healthcare organizations aiming to reduce their ecological footprint while maintaining high standards of patient care. Understanding the views of frontline healthcare professionals is considered essential for designing effective sustainability policies.

Study Aim

The study aimed to explore the perspectives of healthcare professionals in Kazakhstan regarding environmental sustainability within healthcare settings.

Methodology

Researchers utilized an exploratory qualitative design. Four focus group discussions were conducted between June and August 2023 across three cities in Kazakhstan. Participants included nurses, physicians, midwives, and physical therapists. Each group comprised 6-11 participants, with sessions lasting 60-90 minutes. Data analysis was performed using thematic analysis.

Key Findings

The analysis resulted in 137 initial codes, which were organized into 22 sub-themes and five main themes:

  • Environmental sustainability practices in healthcare
  • Purposes of environmental sustainability in healthcare
  • Impact of sustainability practices on patients
  • Challenges in implementing sustainability initiatives
  • Role of healthcare leadership in promoting sustainability

Participants indicated that sustainable practices could improve patient outcomes and organizational efficiency. They identified barriers such as limited resources, insufficient awareness, and inadequate institutional support. Strong leadership was highlighted as a critical factor for successful implementation of green policies.

Conclusions and Implications

The findings offer insights into how healthcare professionals perceive sustainability efforts and emphasize the need for strategic leadership and organizational commitment. Strengthening awareness, resources, and policy support is identified as essential for advancing environmentally responsible healthcare in Kazakhstan.

This study provides evidence for policymakers and healthcare leaders developing sustainable healthcare systems. Integrating environmental sustainability into routine practice has the potential to support both environmental protection and improved patient care.
