Pope Leo XIV Offers Prayers for Cyclone-Hit Madagascar, Extends Lunar New Year Wishes
Solidarity with Madagascar Amid Cyclone Crisis
Pope Leo XIV conveyed his solidarity with the people of Madagascar, who are experiencing the effects of two recent cyclones. He offered prayers for the victims, their families, and all those who have sustained serious damage.
Madagascar has declared a national emergency and appealed for international aid following cyclones Gezani and Fytia. These storms occurred during an intense cyclone season in the Southwest Indian Ocean.
Cyclone Gezani made landfall on February 10, affecting approximately 270,000 people and displacing thousands. Tragically, national authorities have reported a minimum of 40 fatalities.
The country, in collaboration with the United Nations and other partners, has allocated resources towards critical operations. These efforts include search and rescue operations, evacuations, providing shelter, and delivering food assistance to those impacted.
He offered prayers for the victims, their families, and all those who have sustained serious damage.
Lunar New Year Hopes for Peace and Prosperity
In a separate address, Pope Leo XIV also acknowledged the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations observed by billions in East Asia and other regions.
He expressed hope that this celebration would promote stronger family relationships and friendships, bring serenity to homes and society, and serve as an opportunity to collaboratively build a future of peace and prosperity for all peoples.
The Pope extended his good wishes and affection to everyone ahead of the Lunar New Year, which is celebrated on February 17.
