Mets Claim Catcher Ben Rortvedt from Dodgers

The New York Mets have claimed catcher Ben Rortvedt off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. This move brings another backstop to the Mets' organizational depth.

Roster Adjustment Made

To accommodate Rortvedt on the 40-man roster, right-hander Dedniel Nunez was transferred to the 60-day injured list. This creates the necessary space for the newly acquired catcher.

Rortvedt's MLB Journey and Performance

Rortvedt made his MLB debut with the Twins in 2021. Since then, he has gained experience playing for the Yankees, Rays, and Dodgers organizations.

His 2024 season with the Rays included a .228/.317/.303 slash line, an 87 wRC+, and 1.4 fWAR in 112 games.

Defensively, Rortvedt has shown particular strengths. He demonstrated above-average blocking and pitch framing capabilities, though his baserunner throw-out rate was below average. He also served as a backup catcher for the Dodgers, making postseason appearances and earning a World Series ring during his tenure there.

Recent Waiver Activity

Rortvedt has been a player in high demand recently. He has been claimed by multiple teams in quick succession, including the Reds and a re-claim by the Dodgers, before ultimately being acquired by the Mets.

Mets Depth Chart Impact

With the Mets, Rortvedt is projected to be the third catcher on the depth chart, behind Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens.

As he has no remaining options, the Mets will need to either carry three catchers or designate him for assignment if a roster spot does not become available before Opening Day.

His addition also impacts Hayden Senger's position on the organizational depth chart.
