Born into poverty in 18th-century Manchester, England, Ann Lee's early life was marked by a difficult marriage and the tragic loss of four infant children, leading her to find solace and purpose in religion.
Lee later led her followers from England to the American colonies during the tumultuous Revolutionary War, seeking refuge from religious persecution. Her teachings significantly expanded upon existing Shaker beliefs, championing pacifism, gender and racial equality, and celibacy, a principle she extended even to married individuals. Lee reportedly believed God was non-binary and saw herself as the second coming. Despite intense pressure from both sides during the American Revolution, she reportedly maintained a neutral political position.
The distinctive worship practices of the Shakers involved singing, energetic dancing, expressive movements, heavy breathing, and chanting, which they understood as a direct and profound connection to God.
