Meta Halts New Performance-Based Layoffs, Walks Back Earlier Expectations

Meta has stated it will not implement a new round of performance-based layoffs, marking a significant policy clarification. A company spokesperson informed Business Insider that any current individual cases are not part of broader company-wide initiatives.

"we are not doing any 5% low performers like we did last year."

Shifting Stance on Performance Cuts

This statement represents a change from early 2025. An internal FAQ at Meta had reportedly indicated that performance-based job cuts could become an annual practice at that time. Meta had previously communicated it "may use future performance cycles" to remove its lowest performers.

Early last year, Meta reduced its workforce by 5%, specifically citing a focus on low performers.

Broader Workforce Adjustments

This clarification regarding performance-based layoffs follows other business restructurings by Meta. Last month, the company reduced its Reality Labs division by approximately 10%, affecting over 1,000 employees.
