The $1 million VRC Black Caviar Lightning Stakes to Initiate Melbourne Autumn Carnival

The $1 million VRC Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington, a Group 1 WFA race, is set to initiate the Melbourne Autumn carnival. This event marks the first leg of the southern "Triple Crown" for sprinters and the Global Sprint Challenge.

Race Overview

The Saturday card features ten races at Flemington, culminating in the G1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. Eight contenders are entered in this feature race, which holds significant historical weight within Australian racing.

The race is named after the legendary mare Black Caviar, who achieved a three-peat victory from 2011-2013 and holds the race record time of 55.42 seconds.

Key Contenders

Giga Kick

The G1 Champions Sprint winner will resume carrying 58.5 kg. Concerns exist regarding his performance on firm ground, as his best runs since the 2023 Doomben 10,000 have been on rain-affected tracks.

He faces super-classy three-year-olds with a significant weight disadvantage.

Baraqiel

This late-blooming G1 Moir Stakes hero is noted for his perseverance, achieving G1 success at seven years old in his 13th start. His career has been marked by multiple injuries, including a lengthy rehab period. He secured a G1 WFA win at this distance and is considered better when fresh.

His pedigree includes a Hussonet bloodline, associated with speed and preference for firm ground.

Tentyris

A Godolphin homebred, Tentyris gained attention from his debut. An injury prevented his Golden Slipper run, but he later secured a G1 win in the Coolmore Stud Stakes. He dead-heated in the Listed Talindert Stakes at Flemington and performed strongly in the G2 Todman Stakes. He was scratched from the G1 Champions Sprint due to track conditions.

He is bred on the Street Boss/Exceed And Excel nick, known for producing stamina, acceleration, and toughness.

My Gladiola

This I Am Invincible filly is from a line of speed machines. She showcased strong form in trials, including beating Giga Kick. Her achievements include a stakes win on debut in the G3 Blue Diamond Preview and a tough win at Flemington. Her dam, Villa Verde, was a G2 winner.

Her pedigree features linebreeding to several significant bloodlines, including Danzig and Rory's Rocket.

Marhoona

The Golden Slipper winner, Marhoona, seeks to overcome the challenge of Slipper winners returning to G1 form. She is lightly raced, having won the Slipper in her third start, and immediately returned to winning form in the spring. Her pedigree, from Emirates Park, features Snitzel from an Encosta De Lago daughter, Salma, who has produced multiple stakes winners.

Marhoona is linebred to the Blue Hen Dancing Show family.
